Rev. Diana – Good morning, and welcome. If you’re new with us here this morning, my name is Rev. Diana Johnson, Pastor and Spiritual Director here at Mystic Heart. I invite you to settle in, bringing awareness to the breath, allowing it to ground in this space and this time, as we begin our Taizé Experience this morning by joining our voices in musical prayer.

Rev. Diana – There is no greater blessing than to live a life grounded in Love…trusting and knowing that Love is given freely in any and every moment that we remember…soften…open…and receive. Love is the Eternal Goodness of Spirit, forever flowing. We are connected by Love…in Love, we are One.

We take a moment now to bring conscious awareness to our Oneness with, our Global Community…to sense and know our Connection…all humans everywhere are our brothers and sisters…the two-legged and four-legged creatures…the swimmers, creepers, and flyers, as well…the plants…that give us sustenance and purify our air…the lifeforms below the soil, and the soil itself…the water that flows freely, giving us our very lives…family…our family…beings of Radiant Light, inextricable connected by the Great Mystery…by the Spirit of Love.

Let’s take a few moments of silence to sense the Presence of the One Life…of the Light that connects us. There is strength in connection…there is freedom in knowing we are not alone. As we come together in prayer and meditation, we are leaving an imprint of Love, of Peace, of Beauty on human evolution and on the world, for all time. Together, we serve as a conduit for  Grace in the world.

Each of us, in our own lives, seeks Freedom from Discord…freedom from internal and external conflict…and a greater sense of harmony both within, and in our lives. What is it that robs us of our peace? One of the greatest culprits is fear. Some have referred to fear as False Evidence Appearing Real. Let’s take a moment to contemplate what that means… False Evidence Appearing Real. (pause)

It is easy to be fooled by appearances. With all that is going on in the world right now, it would be easy to believe that human beings are ruthless, power-hungry, selfish and unkind by nature. And yet, nothing could be further from the Truth. Human nature, because of its Divine Inheritance, is kind, generous, caring, and compassionate. Our greatest desires are to have our needs met, and to help meet the needs of others…to love and be loved…to offer our gifts in meaningful ways…and to live peacefully in Community.

What has happened? What has gotten in the way, creating so much discord in our individual lives and in the world? We cannot write it off as being an illusion…spiritually by-passing the relative experience of violence, poverty, addiction, hunger, and pain that so many are experiencing right now, and that any or all of us experience in one way or another during the course of our lives. We have to acknowledge the experiences we are having if we ever hope to change them.

We could speak of the many causes that bring about such experiences.

But at the root of every problem, we find fear. Discord happens in our hearts and minds when we give into fear, rather than grounding ourselves in Faith…when we let fear, rather than Love, drive our thoughts, words, and actions. It is fear for our safety and well-being that causes us to self-protect, some to the degree that weapons become a perceived necessity. It is the fear of losing our freedom that causes us to seek power, not realizing that power over others does not bring Strength. That is given of Spirit. It is our fear of not enough to go around, of not having our needs met, that causes us to seek material gain in excess of what we need, even at the expense of leaving our neighbors unsheltered, unfed, and unwell.

How do we break free of fear? The Course in Miracles tells us that in every moment, we are either grounded in, and living from, either fear or Love. There is nothing in between. And that once we know this, we are at choice. We are free to choose again. When we find ourselves in any form of discord, either internally or externally, we can pause long enough to breathe…to self-reflect…what am I feeling right now…what is causing this feeling…what am I afraid of? And finally, what would Love have me do right now?

There are those who say that Love is all that is…all that is real…and that every thought, word, and deed…every want and every need…is either a reflection of Love, and expression of Love, or it’s a call for Love…that in Truth, there is really only Love…the Self-givingness of Spirit, forever in motion…eternally creating.

We ground ourselves in this understanding…that there really is only Love. If what I am experiencing in any given moment doesn’t feel loving, I can ask myself…how might this be a call for Love? Is there some small way that I can answer this call? Can I somehow ease this suffering, even just a little? Can I offer a smile…a listening ear…a compassionate heart…a silent prayer? Can I share of my abundance so that another might be soothed?

At each of our Sunday Gatherings we vision a Love-Soaked World… a world without fear or need… in which all of us are free to live, love, and contribute to the whole in our own unique way… as the individualizations of the Divine that we truly are… what the great first-century Rabbi Yeshua of Nazareth called the Kingdom of Heaven…

Citizens of a Love-Soaked World – or the Kingdom of Heaven – have rights… and responsibilities… we have the right to exercise our freedom… and the responsibility to not infringe on the freedom of others… We have the right to partake of the Earth’s abundance… and the responsibility to share it freely with our siblings…

We have the right to express our sexuality in the way that our hearts and bodies guide us… and the responsibility to make it the highest expression of love for our partner that we can… We have the right to make wise use of natural resources… and the responsibility to respect our environment by living sustainably…

We have the right to express our Divine Gifts in ways that serve the community and the Earth, and be compensated fairly… and the responsibility to respect the contributions of others… We have the right to tread the spiritual path that speaks to our heart… and the responsibility to honor the religious practices of all others…

Rabbi Yeshua said that the Kingdom of Heaven is all around us… and within us… but we cannot claim the rights without also accepting our responsibilities to one another… and to our Mother Earth… As we share our three minutes of Sacred Silence this morning, I invite us to contemplate the rights we would like to enjoy as citizens of our Love-Soaked World… and then think of the responsibility that comes with that privilege… They go hand in hand… What are we willing to contribute in exchange for our blessings?…

O Lord of Love and Light, thank you for your Divine Inspiration… for the Wisdom that wells up from within us… and thank you for these Beloved Souls who worship with me here today… May we always remember who and whose we are… and in exercising our spiritual freedom, may we never fail to respect and protect the rights of others…

Yeshua advised that we seek first the Kingdom of God… and the blessings will follow… but where do we look?… We begin within… finding Peace, Love, and Compassion in our hearts… and then we look without… seeing the Divine Spark in the eye of every other… by looking for the Spirit within all people, things, and situations… by living in Namasté…

As Rev. Diana continues to share her Divine Wisdom, we open our hearts and minds to see and hear in new ways… that we may pierce the disguise and see the Holiness within everything and everyone… never again to believe the False Evidence Appearing Real…

Rev. Diana – Mother Theresa was an example of Love in action. In her essay Compassion in Action, she said this: “To me, God and compassion are one and the same. Compassion is the joy of sharing. It’s doing small things for the Love of each other – just a smile…or showing some simple kindness…It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put in the doing – that’s compassion in action. Religion has nothing to do with compassion; it is our love for God that is the main thing because we have all been created for the sole purpose to love and be loved.”

And may I remind us that when we talk about love for God, we are speaking about our Love for all of creation as perfect expressions of Spirit. We ground ourselves in Love…treating all beings with caring and compassion, because we know that there is really only one of us here…One Life expressing as One Responsive Universe. As we give, so it is given unto us.

As we walk in the world as Love in action, so does the Universe say Yes…you are my Beloved in whom I am well-pleased…and reflects that Goodness back into our lives. This is how it works…the way things are…all the time…whether we’re aware of it or not…whether we believe it or not. The real question is not whether or not we can count on the Great Mystery to reflect back what we put out. It is what are we asking Spirit to say Yes to.

Let’s pray…

Aren’t we blessed to be here, together, sharing this space and this time…magnifying the Power of our intention by coming together in Community…knowing that there is One Divine Life, forever expressing and experiencing Itself as all of Creation. And that means you…and me…and each and every one of our friends, family members, and neighbors…those we like and get along with, and those whom Mother Theresa would call “God in some of his most distressing disguises.” And so, we take it all in…once again, we feel our Connection…we accept that we are One.

Speaking this Truth for myself, and knowing it for each one of us, I move into a new week, a new month, and a new way of being, grounded in Love, grounded in Faith, and releasing any bit of fear that may creep in. I maintain self-awareness, so that I notice when I am out of alignment with Love. I remember to ask myself…what am I feeling? What am I afraid of? And what would Love have me do right now? Who or what is calling for my Love? And then, I shift my thoughts, words, and actions to those that comfort and support me, and those around me. I become a blessing to this world…a conduit for Grace.

Knowing that Spirit is forever saying Yes, I pay attention to what I’m putting out there. I give only what I wish to have returned in kind. And by my conscious thought, words and deeds, I am blessed.

I give so much thanks for this beautiful day…for the beautiful Light Beings who share this space with me…for the abundant support of Spirit through human hands and hearts that pays for this space to house our Gatherings.

I am so grateful for my healthy body and the freedom it affords me…for the enriching experiences that move me along my path gracefully…even when it may not look or feel graceful. Thank you, Spirit, for stretching me and growing me in ways that could never have imagined…and may this continue until the end of my days on this planet.

Thank you for the hands and hearts that brought the food to our table this afternoon. May each one know they are blessed and a blessing. And thank you for the infinite flow of blessings in my life that have not been voiced…they have not gone unnoticed. All of Life is Blessing.

And so, right here and right now, feeling full to overflowing, I release this prayer, calling it done. May I have the eyes to see all that unfolds from this moment forward as answered prayer. And so it is…Amen!

Let’s bask just a little bit longer in this prayerful space…(pause)…

And now returning our awareness to this moment, to our bodies…our senses…the atmosphere in the room…gently opening our eyes and taking in whatever is before us. Look around at who is sharing in celebration this morning…your Spiritual Community…your Sangha…and honoring each one for sharing space with you this morning.

Rev. Diana – Welcome or welcome back. If you’re new with us here this morning, my name is Rev. Diana  Johnson, and I am the Pastor and Spiritual Director here at Mystic Heart Spiritual Center. We are an Independent Interfaith Community that teaches Universal Principles and Practical Spirituality, tracing the common threads of Truth that run through all the world’s great spiritual traditions. Our job is to point you inward, to the Wisdom that lives within your own Mystic Heart.

Are you ready to get this Conversation going with a little bit of music? Here we go.

Rev. Diana – Each one of us has all that is required to stand strong on our own, but how much more powerful we are when we stand together…shine our Light as one, spread our Love as Community. And so we’re going to take a few moments to collectively direct our Creative Energies toward a Powerful Vision…a Vision of the world we wish to live in. Visioning is a Powerful form of prayer that gives the Creative Power of the Universe a blueprint…it sets an intention for the creation of what Charles Eisenstein would call The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know is Possible, or what I refer to as a Love-Soaked World. It’s not that I am delusional, that I don’t see the world as it currently is. It’s that if it’s ever going to change, it needs to start somewhere. Someone needs to create the Vision, needs to speak to the Vision, needs to live into the Vision. Why not us? So I invite you now to settle in…take a couple of deep breaths and consciously engage every bit of creative power at your command. Are you ready?

We envision ourselves now in a world of our creation…where all humans recognize, and are living from, their inherent Freedom…their deepest Wisdom and Generosity, and their most Loving nature…thoughtful of the impact their thoughts, words, and actions have on one another, the community, and the planet…a world without greed, where there is abundance in having enough…where nutritious food, clean water and air are readily available to all beings…where warm, comfortable, and affordable housing is a given…where all beings feel a sense of safety, belonging, and contribution…To these blessings, we say Yes!

Ours is a world where leaders practice integrity and ethical behavior, leading by example and inspiring trust and engagement among the people…a world where policies and social systems support mental and physical health, education, and healthy relationships, and encourage ecological responsibility and sustainability.

Ours is a world where all beings work and play at whatever feeds their soul and are well compensated for their Service…where authenticity and vulnerability are not only welcomed but  celebrated…where the Peace we cultivate within ourselves shows up as a world free of violence, hatred, or indifference…where freedom of thought and open, respectful conversation is modeled, supported and promoted.

Ours is a world where there is respect among people of all nations, and for the fundamental dignity of every human…where the Love that we are here to share is given freely to whomever our hearts are called to love…where we have moved beyond all lines of separation, and live as one human family, caring for one beautiful planet with the reverence she deserves. To these blessings, we say Yes!

We recognize that transformation is an on-going process, and especially in times of great change, people benefit from working, playing, and simply being together.

And so this Community stands as an open and welcoming place for all who seek support, belonging, and a sense of Family. …it redefines Church as a place of Self-Discovery, Authenticity, Kindness, Radical Inclusion, and Unconditional Love. To these blessings, we say Yes!

It is by the Power and Intelligence of the Great Mystery moving through each one of us that this prayer is acted upon, answered even as it is spoken. As one by one, we commit to living into and from this Vision, it cannot be otherwise…we live in a Responsive Universe! Our Word carries Power. And so it is with deep faith, profound gratitude and great Joy that I release my Word to the One Who Gets It Done…And so it is!…Amen!

Bringing awareness back to the body, to the room, to this beautiful life, and to the amazing beings who share this space with us this morning…

There has been a shift in  energy… We have just set a Powerful intention…created a ripple of Grace that has made a lasting imprint. And you were a part of it. Doesn’t that feel good?

Our theme this month is Freedom from Discord, and the topic of Conversation this morning has been False Evidence Appearing Real. If you were here for Taizé, this will be a bullet-point review, so that we can use it as our starting place for a Conscious Conversation.

We began by recognizing that each of us, in our own lives, seeks Freedom from Discord…freedom from internal and external conflict…and a greater sense of harmony both within, and in our lives. We acknowledged that fear is one of the primary experiences that robs us of our peace. We used the acronym F-E-A-R to stand for False Evidence Appearing Real, and talked about how easy it is to be fooled by appearances. As an example, with all that is going on in the world right now, it would be easy to believe that human beings are ruthless, power-hungry, selfish and unkind by nature, yes?

And yet, nothing could be further from the Truth. Human nature, because of its Divine Inheritance, is kind, generous, caring, and compassionate. Our greatest desires are to have our needs met, and to help meet the needs of others…to love and be loved…to offer our gifts in meaningful ways…and to live peacefully in Community. And then we talked about how fear is one of the biggest culprits of disturbing our peace and turning us into beings who are less than kind.

And we talked about how to break free of fear. Finally, we asked ourselves some powerful questions intended to lead us out of fear and back to Love.

As you may know, Chris and I just got back from a five-day Spiritual Living Retreat in Pacific  Grove. To be completely honest, I didn’t want to go. I was feeling resistance. I was tired and discouraged.

What does it mean to be discouraged?

One definition said that being discouraged is “having lost your confidence, hope, or enthusiasm because of a setback, failure, or criticism.” Looking at the etymology, or the history of the word, it means to be dis-heartened. And those definitions fits how I was feeling.

What kinds of things make you feel discouraged?

I’m going to share why I was feeling discouraged, even though it leaves me feeling a little bit vulnerable.

We call ourselves a Spiritual Family…a chosen family.

What are some of the attributes of a family?

One of the things that comes up for me when I think of family is that, no matter what happens between us, we can talk it out. For example, I may say or do something unintentionally that upsets Lucinda. She chooses an appropriate time and comes to talk it out. I come to see her point of view and my part in the situation. I apologize, and it’s done. We still love one another. We’re still connected.

Sadly, this is an ideal, and not all biological families operate this way, much less all Spiritual Families. But what we are doing here is setting a new template for the world we want to live in, right?

So, back to why I was discouraged…a number of folks had been approached out in the community by people encouraging them to leave Mystic Heart to try out something else that was a “better community.” First, let me say that I am the first to recognize that what we do here is not for everyone, and I’m fine with that. We set a high bar for our own growth, and for how we treat one another. We hold ourselves accountable for our thoughts, words, and actions. And while not one of us is humanly perfect, we give one another Grace when we fall. And we show love and respect for one another by refraining from gossip and coming directly to the people with whom we find disagreement of hurt. These are agreements we have made, and living otherwise gets in the way of creating the Love-Soaked World we say we want to live in.

So, after working very hard to guide the creation of a different kind of culture, I was discouraged to hear that this was happening.

I felt tired, a little bit hurt, and fearful that the conversations that were going on out there would tear down what we had built. I guess I felt threatened and began to lose my confidence. In other words, I allowed myself to slip into fear rather than re-grounding myself in Love. I let fear begin to crowd out my faith.

Does that ever happen to you? What kinds of things cause your faith to slip?

Has there been a time in the past week that you let fear take over and put Love in the back seat?

What did you do to pull yourself out of it?

What I did was to reluctantly pack my things, get in the car, and go to the retreat that I had already committed to and paid for.

Isn’t it strange that the one thing that will pull us out of our funk is the thing we are most resistant to?

And so, after six or more hours in the car, and dealing with Bar Area traffic, we arrived and got settled into our room. I was tired and tempted to skip the 7:00 pm opening session…again, resistance kicking in. But I know from past experience that there’s only one way to move through resistance, and that’s to actually feel what I’m feeling and do the thing anyway.

Now mind you, sometimes resistance might be guiding us away from doing something, but this was a Spiritual Retreat…one of my favorite things in the world…and someone else was leading it. It was an opportunity to remember the Truth of who I Am. And that is exactly what ended up happening. We walked into the room, where we knew only three of the musicians, and the transformation began. I’d like to share a bit of what was going on in that room.

And it only got better from there. Over the course of the five days, I was reminded of the Truth. I was reminded about the negativity bias that humans carry in their neurology, and ways to counterbalance that bias so that maintain our internal freedom.

We looked at the labels we have been given and worked with re-framing those labels again to maintain our internal freedom.

We spoke about the process of becoming, and how we are not really human beings…we are human becomings…growth, change and evolution is our nature. I was presented with this quote, which is also true for individuals: “If you are an organization that is about transformation, but you do not evolve, you are not about transformation.”

I heard and was transformed by tons of new music. I found mentorship…someone I could talk to who had been successfully leading her community for 30 years and was still full of passion for her role and her Community. And that was all in the first full day.

Suffice it to say, it was a great experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I feel like my old self again.

Now it’s your turn. Is there a time when you were feeling reluctant to do something, gave in to the reluctance, and slid further into the funk?

How did you finally break the mood?

Is there a time when you were feeling reluctant to do something, did it anyway, and were glad you had listened to whatever Guidance made you do it?

Is there anything else that wants to be spoken right now?

What I’d like to say is that you’re stuck with me, unless you choose to go somewhere else, which is always an option. Only you know what’s best for you.

But it takes time, energy, commitment, and a great deal of patience and understanding to build a healthy Family. And it takes a willingness to show up, to give it your time and your Love. You don’t get the long-term benefits of a devoted Family without commitment and making it a priority in your life. It’s a process, and you have to stay with it to receive the blessings that ultimately come. I’m in for the long haul.

This morning, I offer a prayer of deep gratitude. I Am so thankful for the opportunity to be reminded of Who and Whose I Am…to be reminded of my purpose and my Calling…and to be revitalized by the Love and Acceptance of some beautiful human beings.

I Am deeply grateful for this Spiritual Family that Loves and supports me, just as I seek to Love and support them.

I Am grateful the authenticity and vulnerability that we share with one another…real people living real lives with real passion.

Thank you, Spirit, for this beautiful  church…yes, I called it a church…that gives us a safe space to land, and to be our authentic selves, having real conversations.

And thank you for this life and the thousands of blessings that are forever showering down upon us…for the hands and hearts that took part in every step of bringing the food to our table today. May each person be blessed and know themselves as a blessing in the world.

Here and now, I breathe in the blessings, remembering Who and Whose I Am. Thank you, Spirit, for opening my heart and mind, making me more and more willing to embody and live from that Truth.

Thank you for my evolving faith and keeping me grounded in Love…I know that it allows me to welcome and embrace the changes that are forever within and around me.

Thank you for this Beloved Community, and for the Grace that permeates my experience. In this holy moment, I bask in the Life that fills me to overflowing so that I might bless all who cross my path in this coming week.

Knowing the immense Power of my word and knowing that it creates my experience here and now, I release this prayer to the Wisdom and Intelligence that I call God, knowing beyond all doubt that it is already active and moving my words into form, in more Beautiful ways than I can imagine…in ways that serve the Whole of Creation. And so, I rest, calling it done…And so it is! Amen!
