Call to Awareness – 3 Bells
Chris – Opening Prayer
Rev. Diana – Good morning, and welcome. If you’re new with us here this morning… my name is Rev. Diana Johnson. We begin our Taizé Journey by joining our voices in musical prayer.
Rev. Diana, Chris, & Marsh – Taizé Chants
- Welcome Home to Your Mystic Heart, written by Diana & Chris Johnson
- Make Me An Instrument, written by Kurt Van Sickle & St. Francis of Assisi
Rev. Diana – Make me an instrument of Thy Peace…breathing that in, in all of its depth…and letting it go, allowing the Peace that dwells within to move into the space around us…claiming this as the Truth for each one of us…I Am an instrument of Peace…breathing that in…I Am an instrument of Peace…Peace in my family, in my neighborhood and the greater community, Peace in the world. Take a moment now to sense the body relaxing, the mind slowing, the emotions calming, the spirit grounded…
(Pause)
It serves the Highest Good of all when each of us walks as an instrument of Peace…we are completely interconnected with all of Life, and so our Peace ripples out and touches everyone and everything. We take a moment now to strengthen awareness of our Oneness with the Global Community… envisioning and sensing a web of Consciousness surrounding and infusing our planet…feeling ourselves to be a Point of Radiant Light in that web…knowing that there is only One Light, and that every human is an expression of that same Light…that every animal, plant, rock and grain of sand…the elements…earth, air, fire and water, are all expressions of Spirit… enlivened by the Divine Spark. Sensing my Light enmeshed with All That Is, I feel our Connection.
(Pause)
Because we are One in Spirit, and because we have been given the capacity, it ours to respect and care for one another…for all life forms…for the amazing planet that sustains us.
(Pause)
The world is ready for Deep Change…ready for us to bring about Deep Change in ourselves, so that those changes might ripple out and have a positive impact on the Whole. Sacred Mother is, in fact, going through some profound changes, with or without us…and in the process, showing us that the only thing we can count on is change…that maybe we might seek to become more accepting and comfortable with change.
(Pause)
As we sit, grounded in the Peace that fills our hearts, our minds, and our bodies, we reflect on the many ways of being in the world, of interacting with our environments and relating to one another…we consider our own stance as we move through our lives. We take a moment to ask and listen…What are my assumptions about the way things work?
(Pause)
In the Science of Mind and Spirit philosophy, we are offered a particular lens through which we might consider our own ways of being…four human tendencies that are more or less prominent as we grow in Spiritual Awareness. Often, we move in and out of these phases or stages, no right, no wrong, just what is…
The first is Victim Consciousness. Taking a moment to consider…do I more often than not, or even sometimes, see life as happening to me? Am I at the mercy of external forces? Do I have a tendency to blame others and feel victimized by my circumstances?
(Pause)
We refer to the second as Manifestor Consciousness. Do I tend to see life as happening by me, understanding and truly believing that I shape my own experience of reality through my thoughts and actions? Do I like to take control of, and responsibility for, the circumstances in my life?
(Pause)
The next stage is Channel Consciousness. Do I see life as happening through me? Can I let go of the need to control circumstances, and allow inspiration to flow through and Guide me?
(Pause)
And finally, Being Consciousness. Do I see Life as happening as me? Do I live in a state of Unity, feeling no separation between myself and the Universe? Do I live from a deep knowing that I Am here for the pleasure and expression of Source?
(Pause)
These are the four stages of human consciousness as defined by Rev. Michael Beckwith of Agape International. Each of us has all of these stages and their qualities and behaviors within us. Whether in thought, word, or action, we move back and forth, from one to the other, depending on the circumstance, and on our own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual state at the time. As we grow in awareness and spiritual maturity, the tendency is to settle into Victim Consciousness less and less of the time. Instead, we might take matters into our own hands…or listen for Inner Guidance…or completely let go and let God.
(Pause)
Four stages…The number four shows up as significant across the world’s traditions, whether we’re speaking of spiritual, psychological, or material realms. The symbolic meaning of the number four is almost universally tied to stability, structure, the natural order of Life. This is seen in the natural world, in the four elements…Earth, Air, Fire, Water…the four cardinal directions…North, South, East, West… and the four seasons.
Four signifies a completed cycle or totality, such as the four phases of the moon or the four corners of the earth. It represents order and discipline.
In the Hindu tradition, there are four stages of consciousness: waking, dreaming, deep sleep, and pure consciousness or enlightenment.
In Buddhism, there are Four Noble Truths…which are suffering, the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path to cessation. (Pause) There are also four Immeasurables, which are the virtues of Equanimity, Loving Kindness, Compassion, and Sympathetic Joy.
(Pause)
The number four appears in modern psychology as the biological, neurobiological, cognitive, and conscious functioning of the human brain or mind. And it shows up again in Karl Jung’s four functions of the human…thinking, feeling, sensing, and intuiting.
The number four points to Wholeness. As we walk this path that we have chosen…or the path that has chosen us…we must include and care for the four aspects of our humanity if we are to move toward integration and Wholeness…four facets of one Sacred Being. It is important that we nurture our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects, so that we might reveal our Hidden Wholeness. As each of us takes an active role in our own transformation, so will the world be Deeply Changed for the better.
Chris – Guided Meditation
Evolution may be thought of as the generic, upward spiraling tendency of life to become more complex… to express in more diverse ways… to adapt to its environment in new, more effective ways… The organism exhibits greater freedom and autonomy… All of this is driven by an instinctive purposiveness… a Divine Urge to grow…
Spiritual evolution has this generic quality… we have been evolving spiritually all along… long before we consciously committed to our spiritual path… that is what led us to this teaching … and to this Beloved Community… But as we commit to our own spiritual growth… as we consciously seek it… evolution takes on a new quality…
The Christian mystic Ernest Holmes wrote that generic “…evolution has brought [humans] to a point of self-expression… and it can do no more for [us] until [we] consciously co-operate with it…” As we accept responsibility for our own spiritual growth… as we invite the Divine Presence into our awareness, our evolution is quickened…
It is this surrender to the Divine Urge within us that moves us out of victim consciousness… we become co-creators of our life… and beyond that, we let Spirit flow through us… we become an instrument of the Divine on Earth… and finally we grow beyond duality… we are unique expressions of the Great Mystery…
Our conscious cooperation with Spirit accelerates our growth in consciousness… Our higher Self knows we’re serious… As we share our three minutes of Sacred Silence this morning, let us contemplate our commitment to spiritual growth… Let us consider in what areas of life might we still be experiencing victimhood… in which areas we are actively co-creating our life with Spirit… and where we are allowing the Divine to flow through us and express as us… Let God guide you to your next yet-to-be…
Silence – 3:00
Divine Beloved… Great Spirit within me… thank you for this time of inspiration… of communion with you… and with these beautiful and holy souls who worship here with me… May we always remember to listen for your still small voice… and may we have the courage and willingness to heed your guidance…
These four stages: to me… by me… through me… and as me… are not discrete… they are more of a sliding scale… We may have areas of life where we feel empowered as a co-creator… and others that seem out of our control… Don’t judge yourself… Simply start where you are… do what you can… with whatever you have…
As Rev. Diana resumes her Taizé meditation this morning, we allow her inspiration to nestle deep within us… to transform us… to evolve us… as we grow upwards through the Four Levels of Consciousness… into full Self-realization…
Rev. Diana – Throughout the month of February, we are contemplating what it means to undergo Deep Change…Real Transformation. Real and lasting change requires us to let go of what is no longer working, so that something new can take root. Deep Change calls us to conscious and willing action. As a people, individually and collectively, we are being challenged to outgrow our victim tendencies, to take responsibility for our thoughts, words, and actions, past, present, and future…to look deeply at Who we are, at who we’ve been, and Who we’ve come here to be. We are being stretched and grown by the rapid and dramatic changes happening in the world…and coming to see that we are the hands, feet, hearts and voices of the Divine on earth…we are coming to know that Life doesn’t just happen to us and through us, but It is happening AS each one of us, right here, and right now.
Musical Meditation – Building Their World, by Michael Gott
Rev. Diana – Closing Prayer
Great Spirit, there is ever and always One Thing happening…Life expressing as all of creation…The Great Mystery coming to know Itself as All That Is. What a blessing that I Am, each one of us is, one of the ways that Spirit is taking form…perfectly, uniquely, and with great intention. What a privilege to be alive at such an exciting time…to be Called into Service as an agent for Deep Change. And how challenging to answer that Call!
Right here and now, I remember that I have all of the Qualities of Spirit within me…there is nothing more I need to have or to be…given at birth…factory equipment. One by one, I allow each Quality to be revealed…in Perfect Timing, as its needed.
As I move into my week, I remember that my thoughts, words, and actions matter…that I am helping to Build Their World. May I leave this world, in one way or another, just a little bit better than I found it.
May I be constantly reminded that I am not a victim…that my experience of Life is my responsibility…that I am not only a vessel for Spirit to move through, but an expression of Divine Light…Spirit living Its life as me.
I am so grateful for this beautiful day, and for every blessing that flows into and through my life. Thank you, Spirit, for this safe space to be me, and for these beautiful beings who share this amazing life with me. The Love and sense of family in this room is palpable, and I Am so grateful.
And so, immersed in the atmosphere of Grace, I release my prayer now, trusting in the Loving and Lawful Presence of Spirit to make it so. May I have eyes to see everything that comes from this moment forward as answered prayer. I let it go, fully and completely, calling it done. And so it is! Amen!
Coming back into this space, we open our eyes, our hearts, and our minds. Take a look at who is here celebrating with you this morning. This is your Spiritual Family…one of your support systems. These are some of the people who care about you, who are there for you if you need anything.

Conscious Conversation
Chris – Opening Prayer
Rev. Diana – Welcome or welcome back…and thank you for being here. I know you’ll be glad you came. If you’re new with us here this morning… my name is Rev. Diana Johnson, and I am the Pastor and Spiritual Director of Mystic Heart Spiritual Center. We are an Independent Interfaith Community that teaches Universal Principles and Practical Spirituality, tracing the common threads of Truth that run through all the world’s great traditions. It is my prayer that something you hear this morning will lead you back to the Wisdom and Guidance of your own Mystic Heart.
Let’s get our Conversation started by joining our voices in song and giving our bodies a chance to move!
Rev. Diana, Chris, & Marsh – Opening Music
- Welcome to the Mystic Heart, written by Diana & Chris Johnson
- One Big Family, written by Robin Hackett & Gary Lynn Floyd
- Song – I Release by Ricki Byars
Rev. Diana – Gently close your eyes and Vision with me a new version of life on earth, a Love-Soaked World…where all humans are living from their deepest Wisdom and greatest Generosity…their most Loving nature…thoughtful of the impact their thoughts, words, and actions have on one another, the community, and the planet…a world without greed, where there is abundance in having enough…where nutritious food, clean water and air are readily available to all, no matter where you live, the color of your skin, or which family you’re born into…where warm, comfortable, and affordable housing is a given…where all beings feel a sense of safety, belonging, and contribution…
To these blessings, we say Yes!
Ours is a world where mental/physical health, education, and healthy relationships are ensured by social systems grounded in Integrity, Honesty, and Wholeness…where all beings work and play at whatever feeds their soul and are well compensated for their Service…and are valued and respected for their inherent Goodness. Authenticity and vulnerability are not only welcomed but celebrated. The Peace we cultivate within ourselves shows up as a world free of violence, hatred, or indifference. The Love that we are here to share is given freely to whomever our hearts are called to love. We have moved beyond all lines of separation, and live as one human family, caring for one beautiful planet with the reverence she deserves.
To these blessings, we say Yes!
By the Power of our collective intention, imagining, and inspired action, we have undergone an amazing transformation…we are living in a world that works for all beings. Giving no power to appearances, we live according to our highest aspirations…we do not lower our Vision no matter what the world may say. Our deep faith tells us that all being turned to Good, and so it is. We walk in gratitude, respect, reverence, and humility as we recognize the Sacred in everyone and everything…there is a general sense of thriving. It is through our hands, feet, hearts, and voices that positive change is forever happening. We have aligned all of our actions with our Vision, living these changes in our own lives, with our families, friends, communities, and other nations…To these blessings, we say Yes!
We recognize that transformation is an on-going process, and in times of great change, people benefit from working, playing, and simply being together. And so this Community stands as an open and welcoming place for all who seek support, belonging, and a sense of Family. …it redefines Church as a place of Self-Discovery, Authenticity, Kindness, Radical Inclusion, and Love. To these blessings, we say Yes!
By the Power of the Great Mystery moving through each one of us, this prayer is acted upon, answered even as it is spoken. I trust in Divine Presence, Timing, and Process to make it so. And so it is with the deepest humility and gratitude that I release my Word to the One Who Gets It Done…And so it is!…Amen!
Bringing awareness back to the body, to the room, to this beautiful life, and to the amazing beings who share this space with us this morning…
Welcome back. Doesn’t that feel good? We just shifted the energy for the entire planet. Our prayer is rippling out into the race consciousness, doing its Good Work. And there’s nothing that anyone can do about it…our loving act of defiance for this week.
Let’s take a moment to bask in that Powerful Creative energy…look around to say good morning to your Spiritual Family.
If you were with us at Taizé this morning, you know that our topic of reflection has been the Four Stages of Consciousness. It ties in with February’s theme, Deep Change…the journey of transformation that each of us is on, whether we know it or not…whether we like it or not.
I’m going to begin by giving a bullet point summary of this morning’s Taizé for those who were not here. Then I’ll use that as a jumping off point for our Conversation.
We started out by drawing attention to the many ways we can show up in the world as we interact with our environments and relate to one another. We were offered a particular lens through which we might consider our own ways of being…four ways of seeing and being that we move through as we grow in Spiritual Awareness.
And we used questions for contemplation as our vehicle. Here are the questions I asked us to consider – we’ll come back around to each one during out conversation.
Do I more often than not, see life as happening to me? Am I at the mercy of external forces? Do I have a tendency to blame others and feel victimized by my circumstances? We called this Victim Consciousness.
(Pause)
Second, do I tend to see life as happening by me, understanding and truly believing that I shape my own experience of reality through my thoughts and actions? Do I like to take control of, and responsibility for, the circumstances in my life? We called this Manifestor Consciousness.
(Pause)
Next, do I see life as happening through me? Can I let go of the need to control circumstances, and allow inspiration to flow through and Guide me? We called this Channel Consciousness.
(Pause)
And finally, do I see Life as happening as me? Do I live in a state of Unity, feeling no separation between myself and the Universe? Do I live from a deep knowing that I Am here for the pleasure and expression of Source? We called this Being Consciousness.
(Pause)
Again, these are the four stages of human consciousness as defined by Rev. Michael Beckwith, a Minister in the New Thought Tradition. He teaches that each of us has all of these stages and their qualities and behaviors within us.
We acknowledged the number four as significant across world traditions, whether we’re speaking of the spiritual, psychological, or material realms. The symbolic meaning of the number four is almost universally tied to stability, structure, the natural order of Life, complete cycles, order and discipline. And we gave some examples from a variety of traditions.
Finally, we said that as part of the Deep Change happening on the planet, we are being challenged to outgrow our victim tendencies, to take responsibility for our thoughts, words, and actions…to look deeply at Who we are, who we’ve been (individually and as a people), and Who we’ve come here to be. There was more there…and you can see it online if you’re interested in getting the whole picture.
Now let’s move into Conscious Conversation. Most of you know that my early Spiritual Journey and my Ministerial education prior to my Interfaith Studies was in the New Thought Tradition. That title is often greatly misunderstood.
Who can tell me, what is New Thought?
(a philosophy based on Universal Principles, the Perennial Philosophy, and ancient wisdom traditions; no one intended that we think of it as some all-new teaching; hold a different thought, have a different experience)
What spiritual traditions or churches fall under the umbrella of New Thought?
(Unity, Centers for Spiritual Living, Divine Science, Christian Mysticism, Esoteric Christianity)
Because I used an example from the Agape Branch of Science of Mind and Spirit in the Taizé, and because I’m very familiar with its teachings, I’m going to focus on that tradition to tease apart the Four Stages of Consciousness, comparing them to the Science of Mind and Spirit Continuum, or the levels of depth that can be found in its teachings…depths that are frequently passed over, or not understood at all.
Several years ago, I wrote a blog addressing this subject, so I’m going to use some of that piece to introduce the questions for today. I started by saying,
“I have noticed that there is often a lack of clarity in the minds of students about Holmes’s teaching…that it is primarily a philosophy used for manifesting the things we wish to have and experience in our lives. And it can certainly be used in this way – if I have need of some material thing or condition in my life, there is nothing wrong with using Affirmative Prayer and positive thinking to have my needs met. In fact, I may be incapable of looking beyond that circumstance until it is taken care of. But there is much, much more to it than that.
Do you think of New Thought as a Manifestor Spirituality? Do you have any experience with that aspect of The Science of Mind and Spirit philosophy, or the teachings of Unity?
Many folks don’t know that it is really called The Science of Mind and Spirit , and its teachings form a continuum, a multi-leveled, multi-faceted philosophy and theology, and it serves us best when we understand its many aspects.
Something that is important to remember…whether we’re talking about Science of Mind and Spirit or any other religion/philosophy/theology, each one has a wide spectrum. No matter which path we follow, we begin studying it at one end, the beginner’s level.
What is the beginner’s level in the New Thought Tradition?
(looking at our thought patterns and habits to see where they may be serving us and where they may be undermining us; We begin to entertain the idea that we are the Divine in form; we are asked to take responsibility for our lives; we are told that whatever we choose to change, we have the power to change; we are encouraged to look at our words as indicators or expressions of our thought patterns and change any language that indicates doubt, limitation, or other negative mind habits. This is the Primer Level of Affirmative Prayer)
In this stage, we learn about the Creative Process, and how by the Power of Spiritual Law, we are creating our life’s circumstances and conditions by attracting, allowing, or promoting certain people and circumstances. As we begin to understand the beginning level of The Law of Attraction, we start to see how things came to be the way they are. We take responsibility for our thoughts, words, and actions, and for some of the conditions is our lives. We may come to Science of Mind and Spirit feeling very much the victim…things in life happen TO me. I know I did!
What outward signs might we see when someone enters into, or is living from, this stage of spiritual development?
(constant drama; blaming; poor me; it’s not my fault; I can’t help it; need for control, but often out of control)
We refer to Victim Consciousness as the first stage of Spiritual Evolution. This early level of SOMAS moves us from the Victim State into the second stage…things in life happen BY MEANS OF ME.
What does that mean…things in life happen by means of me?
(God is not out there doing things to me; my life unfolds according to the choices I make, my habits and behavior patterns; if I want something to change, I need to make changes; I am responsible for my life)
What outward signs might we see when someone enters into, or is living from, this stage of spiritual development?
(more confidence; a little less need for control; willingness to consider other ideas; a bit more self-reflection; less blaming; less need to be right; there is a danger of excessive self-blame at this stage – careful not to get stuck)
Also, it is at this level of Science of Mind and Spirit, we begin taking a deeper look at the Qualities of Spirit.
What do I mean by the Qualities of Spirit?
(Love, Life, Light, Peace, Power, Beauty, Joy, Integrity, Harmony, Justice, Freedom, etc.)
We acknowledge these Qualities as inherent to all of Creation and begin to look for signs that they exist in us, and in the others who are part of our lives. We start with those who are easy to be with and move to those who we might consider an enemy or opponent.
In this stage, we also learn more about the Creative Process, and how by the Power of Spiritual Law, we are creating our experience of life’s conditions and circumstances. We begin to accept that while we cannot always change our outer circumstances, we are 100% responsible for how we receive and experience them.
As we come to understanding the intermediate level of The Law of Attraction, we start to see that it is really a Law of Radiation…that according to our intentions, motivations, expectations, and faith, we determine what can become possible in our lives. It is at this point that we might ask, “If Spirit is Infinite and offers Infinite Possibilities, why am I experiencing limitation?”
How would we answer that question? If Spirit is Infinite and offers Infinite Possibilities, why am I experiencing limitation?
(our own mind-set determines how much Good can come our way, how much we are willing and able to receive)
At this stage of the journey, we begin to take responsibility for our intentions, motivations, expectations, and faith , and begin the process of Deep Change, not so much in the outer conditions, but in our inner being. This level of Science of Mind and Spirit usually finds the student at the second stage of spiritual development, BY MEANS OF ME, and offers study and Practice that will move him or her to the third stage of Spiritual Evolution…
…things happen by GOD MOVING THROUGH ME. In other words, I become the conduit through which Spirit works.
What outward signs might we see when someone enters into, or is living from, this stage of spiritual development?
(changes in language; listening more for understanding, speaking less; softer, more peaceful manner; almost no drama; taking responsibility; greater self-motivation; more poised; less self-centered; willing to Serve others)
Through dedicated Study and Practice, placing our faith in the Good and surrendering to the Divine Flow becomes more and more comfortable, and eventually automatic. This is when we are ready to approach the deep Mysticism of Science of Mind and Spirit.
Our meditation turns to contemplation of the Divine Itself, and to letting go altogether of our thoughts, words, actions, intentions, motivations, and expectations. We are simply grounded in Faith that God is All That Is, that I Am one with That…and then we let go and allow the Divine to become real in our experience.
What outward signs might we see when someone enters into, or is living from, this stage of spiritual development?
(embodied Practice; meditation Practice carries over into our lives…at times our lives become our meditation; beginner’s ,mind.
…deep sense of poise and equanimity in our experiences and relationships; much less attached to outcomes; let go of the illusion of control; at peace with what is in every moment)
This level of Science of Mind and Spirit usually finds the student at the third stage of spiritual development…things happen…life is evolving…AS GOD ITSELF, IN FORM AS ME. All that unfolds is simply Spirit in form, expressing and experiencing Itself as my life. Once we begin the regular Practice of sitting in the Silence of Spirit and carrying that Silence into our lives, Science of Mind and Spirit is exactly like any other Mystical Path. It leads us to the direct experience of Infinite Intelligence, God, Source, the One, the Way, Buddha Nature, or Nature Herself…or whatever our name for the unnamable may be.
It is important to remember that each of us moves from one stage of Spiritual Development to another, up and down the spectrum, every day. We may function at different levels in varying circumstances or areas of life, depending on how much sleep we have had, or what we eaten for breakfast, or whether or not our body feels well. This is a fluid process, not a dogma or set path…it is the Dance of Spirit in form, by means of its Creation. And its natural tendency is to move us into our next yet to be.
What a great conversation. Is there anything else that needs to be spoken at this time?
Let’s Close in Prayer…
My prayer, and what I believe with all my heart, mind, body and soul, is that we are in the beginnings of such a transformation…Mother Earth and Great Spirit are on the move, showing us the err of our ways, and pointing us toward a new way of life on earth. I Am so grateful that as perfect and intentional expressions of Divinity, we have the capacity, courage, and willingness to make inspired choices. Each of us, in our own unique ways, do what is our to do, for the Good of All…for the Good of our world and our future. I know that we are agents of positive change…we are here at this time and in this place for a reason. We give thanks for the privilege of being alive, right here and right now. I Am so grateful to know that I can count on a Loving and Lawful Presence. I Am grateful to have a safe space to express myself, and a spiritual family to support my journey.
Thank you, Holy One, for the many blessings and miracles of this and every day…Thank You for these amazing humans that share my life with me. I Am so grateful for the Abundance of Spirit, and how it shows up every day…for the countless hands that it took to bring our feast to the table today, and for the nourishment our time together provides…And so, immersed in this atmosphere of Grace, I release my prayer now, trusting in the Loving and Lawful Presence of Spirit to make it so. May I have eyes to see everything that comes from this moment forward as answered prayer. I let it go, fully and completely, calling it done. And so it is! Amen!
