Taizé
Call to Awareness – 3 Bells
Sherri – Opening Prayer
Rev. Diana – Good morning, and welcome. If you’re new with us here this morning, my name is Rev. Diana Johnson. We begin our Taizé Journey this morning with a couple of deep breaths…letting go…fully arriving…and joining our voices in musical prayer.
Rev. Diana, Chris, & Marsh – Taizé Chants
- Welcome Home to Your Mystic Heart, written by Diana & Chris Johnson
- Oyaheya (Praise the Spirit), written by Rickie Byars
Rev. Diana – We move more deeply into the flow of Taizé by once again stilling the body, and taking a couple of long, deep conscious breaths…and as the body relaxes, allow the breath to become slow and quiet. (Pause)
It is in this calm that you find your Center…your place of deep Peace and Connection with Source…where you can let go and surrender to the Grace and Beauty of Life. It is in this Heart Space that you recognize the many blessings that surround you…and where you can feel a profound sense of gratitude for those gifts.
At your Center lies your True Self…the part of you that has never strayed, has never been hurt…where there is nothing missing, nothing broken…this is the Beautiful, Perfect, Whole, Complete, Real You. This is the God Self, made in the image and likeness of the Creator. And it is from this place of Wholeness that together we allow ourselves to be carried away by the music…if we feel so moves, we chant…we sing as prayer…so that we are transformed by the singing. Oyaheya…Praise the Spirit.
As we recognize the many blessings in our lives, we become more aware of the Spiritual Quality of Abundance. “And from this fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” (this from the book of John, 1:16)
Let us acknowledge this Potent Spiritual Qualities existing throughout our Global Community, knowing that Spirit showers Its blessings on all equally…as we acknowledge our oneness with All That Is.
Together, we envision a web of consciousness that is everywhere-present, each of us a Radiant point of Light…connected to all others.(Pause) As we sense the interconnectedness of every human being, we extend our Vision to include all creatures everywhere…each one shimmering with its own unique Light…and then extending further to include every plant and tree, every rock and grain of sand, every drop of water…the soil, the stars, the clouds, all radiating Spirit’s Light…God expressing and experiencing Itself by means of Its Creation…and we see that there are no spaces between us…our web has become one continuous field of Consciousness…we sense that there is no beginning, no ending…we feel it extending out beyond our beautiful planet, into the cosmos…the Body of God.
Filled to overflowing with Its Light, we share a heartfelt intention for our time together…to feel and experience the Truth of who we are; we acknowledge our responsibility to one another as members of one human family, and as co-creators and caretakers of this beautiful planet; and we grow in awareness so that we might consciously Plant the Seeds of Authenticity.
As we join in consciousness with all of Creation, our Work here is empowered…Our collective prayer and meditation leave a positive imprint on the world…on the Whole of Creation. Together, we consciously create a huge ripple of Compassion and Caring, of Peace and Joy, of Beauty and Grace, that directly imprints upon the Whole for all time…we invoke the Loving Presence and Intelligence that gives shape and form to the transformation that is occurring in our lives, and on our planet.
Right here and now, in the silence, Wholeness is being revealed.
Planting seeds of authenticity…what does that mean? What does it mean to express myself authentically? In our modern world, it can be misunderstood.
There are those who feel that expressing authentically means doing or saying anything they are feeling, no matter the situation. I do not believe this is true authenticity.
The word authentic comes from the same root as author. It refers to something or someone that is genuine…someone who creates or invents something new…someone who is expressing the unique self that she was created to be, independent of the good opinion of others. Authenticity does not grant me license to be thoughtless or brash in what I am expressing, or to speak my mind no matter who may be harmed. In fact, my authenticity demands that I speak and act according to the Goodness, Love, and Compassion that is the Truth of my being.
My authenticity does grant me permission to stand in my Spiritual Authority, asking for Guidance as to who and what might be best for me, and accordingly, knowing that as we are all One, what is truly best for me is also best for the Whole.
I believe that each of us was created in the image and likeness of God…we have God potential. But I know that I was created to be absolutely unique…a one-of-a-kind…and so were you. Interesting that we stand in our individuality, not realizing that the word individual means indivisible. So when I say that I am an authentic individual, what I’m really saying is that I am a unique expression of the One God, indivisible from all others, yet bringing my personal qualities and gifts into the world, in new ways every day in service to the Whole. Our Authenticity is how God is able to experience Its Infinite Nature and Possibility as Divine Human.
Although there are not many qualities that are more important to human beings than being unique, or what we think of as authentic, we are not very good at it. The way we tend to follow fads, to copy what our friends are doing, to follow the herd mentality, demonstrates that very often, we are not looking within for our unique gifts.
We become distracted by the world around us and lose track of our True Nature, of our True Self, and of our True God.
We forget what it means to be truly authentic…giving expression to the gifts that we were given from birth and forgetting why we were given these gifts in the first place.
“Our love for others is our grateful response to the love God first demonstrated to us.” (John 4:19) And we know that by Love, what we mean is self-givingness. We give of ourselves to others in response to the generosity of Spirit…God’s giving of Itself to meet every need. As we give selflessly, a new cause is set in motion. Spirit receives the imprint of our generosity, and by Its Nature, responds in kind, showering blessing upon blessing into our lives.
One Eternal Cycle, forever in action…Spirit pouring Its gifts so that we might be empowered to share ours, and in turn we are prospered to share more. What a beautiful dance of Spirit as we come to accept that we are One With the Divine.
Guided Meditation
As Rev. Diana mentioned before, authenticity derives from the same Greek roots as author, authority, and even autism… Authenticity’s first root, autos, means self… it is followed by hentēs, meaning doer… Authentic people do themselves… that is, they express Spirit as their true Self… who Divine Wisdom created them to be…
To be fully authentic, I must first know my Self… not who I think I am… not who I’d like to be… but the actual person I show up as… I must strip away pretenses… defenses… the masks… the persona my human self portrays… I must dig through all I have covered up and find the me that God made… and face who I have been afraid to be……
How and where do we begin such work?… I begin with meditation… follow the breath… allowing my mind to slow down… Then I pray… for courage to explore the dark, sometimes scary places within… I ask Spirit, “Who am I, really?”… and then I listen… Divine Omniscience already knows anything we could tell it… so I let God pray me…
The next practice is a deep self-inquiry… wondering who is the I that is asking?… Is it my body?… my mind?… or is it my soul… the Atman… that part of me that was never born… cannot die… and has never sinned?… My body and mind are transitory… temporary vehicles for my eternal soul… for my authentic Self…
Moses called the Authentic Self the I Am… I Am the I Am that I am… you are the I Am that you are… as we share these three minutes of Silent Communion, I invite us to contemplate our Authentic Self… the I Am within… using the via negativa, the negative way… by looking at our personality traits, talents, foibles, and other qualities, and asking, “Is this who I Am?”… not really and sort of are noes… most of the answers are no… but keep digging through all of the noes… until you find the yes…
Silence – 3:00
Great Spirit… Creator and source of Life… thank you for this time of Blessed Communion with you and with these beautiful souls gathered to worship with me… Thank you for your Unconditional Love and for the love and support of our Beloved Community as we all strive to more fully express our Authentic Selves…
In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna, “The soul is neither born, nor does it ever die; nor having once existed, does it ever cease to be. The soul is without birth, eternal, immortal, and ageless. It is not destroyed when the body is destroyed…”[i] Than is Divine Spirit within us… and that is our Authentic Self…
As Rev. Diana continues her Taizé meditation, we listen with our inner ear… we turn off all our filters… all our defenses… all our preconceived notions… and in this Sacred Vulnerability, we become fertile soil… for Planting Seeds of Authenticity…
Rev. Diana – We lose sight of our human authenticity when we take our focus off of the one true God, the Universal Intelligence back of all life, the Infinitely Loving, giving Presence that permeates all of existence.
I would like to share a reading from Sister Joan Chittister. She says this:
False gods are very easy to come by in life. They seduce us with power, money, and fame. They are the things I can’t give up, the things I can’t do without, the things that shout out my identity to the world so that the world can know how important I am.
We make gods out of positions we hold. If people don’t know what we are, we make sure to tell them.
We make gods out of the social system we have cultivated, about who invites us where to do what.
We make gods out of the money and the baubles and the trinkets in our lives.
We learn even to make gods out of the very religious practices and spiritual disciplines that are meant to lead us beyond ourselves to God.
And in it all, we develop a totally inauthentic self. Not only do others not know who we really are behind all the bling and titles, but we don’t know either. Not only have we fooled others about what we really think and who we really are; too often we fool ourselves as well. More than that, too often we stop thinking about anything of real value at all.
We stop questioning our own motives. We fail to stretch beyond the comfortable spiritual conversations of another time and age. We stop growing inwardly, satisfied with where we have come, however far from the real content of the spiritual life. We play at being spiritual and do not even know we are only playing.
Out of that masking of the self comes another kind of confusion. When we are not brining an honest self to the search for God we cannot possibly find the real God.
We confuse the God of Life with the simpler version – the God of living. We want God to satisfy our present comforts, not as a guide to growth.
Prayer that emerges out of authenticity and honesty, however, takes us beyond all subterfuge, all hiding from God – even behind holy things. It requires us to unmask ourselves to ourselves so that God can come into our lives through our weaknesses…(through our true humility). We must learn to pray out of our weaknesses, (with humility) so that God(‘s Power) can become our Strength.
She offers a mantra for us to take into the silence: “Dear God, fill me with yourself so that I might be less full of myself.”
Silence – 1 minute
Author CS Lewis offers this simple prayer, naming it the prayer preceding all prayers. Let’s use it as our closing today, trusting and knowing that a prayer spoken and deeply felt is a prayer answered:
Holy One…Creator or all that is…and the very Life that lives as my Life…My prayer today is simple, but profound.
“May it be the real I who speaks. May it be the real Thou that I speak to.”
“May it be the real I who speaks. May it be the real Thou that I speak to.”
I invite you to take it as your mantra this week: “May it be the real I who speaks. May it be the real Thou that I speak to.” If this becomes your heart’s desire, then it is already done. And so it is. Amen!
I invite you to bring your awareness back to your body…to your senses…to the atmosphere in the room…when you feel ready, gently open your eyes and take in whatever is before you. Notice the beautiful beings that are sharing this time and space with you this morning. Feel the Love in this place.

Sherri – Opening Prayer
Rev. Diana – Welcome or welcome back…and thank you for joining us this morning. If you’re new with us here this morning… my name is Rev. Diana Johnson, and I am the Pastor and Spiritual Director of Mystic Heart Spiritual Center. We are an Independent Interfaith Community that teaches Universal Principles and Practical Spirituality, tracing the common threads of Truth that run through all the world’s great traditions. Our primary message is that all the Wisdom and Guidance you need lives within your own Mystic Heart. I pray that something you hear today will point you in that direction.
Let’s get our Conversation started by joining our voices in song and giving our bodies a chance to move!
Rev. Diana, Chris, & Marsh – Opening Music
- Welcome to the Mystic Heart, written by Diana & Chris Johnson
- One Big Family, written by Robin Hackett & Gary Lynn Floyd
- Stand, written by Karen Drucker
Rev. Diana – We are a Stand for Peace…We are a stand for Love…We are a Stand for Joy, and we are making a new world now. Please follow me into the creative space of the imaginal realm…and Vision with me a new version of life on earth, a Love Soaked World…where all humans are living from their deepest Wisdom and Generosity, and their most Loving nature…thoughtful of the impact their thoughts, words, and actions have on one another, the community, and the planet…a world without greed, where there is abundance in having enough…where nutritious food, clean water and air are readily available to all beings…
…where warm, comfortable, and affordable housing is a given…where all beings feel a sense of safety, belonging, and contribution…To these blessings, we say Yes!
Ours is a world where mental/physical health, education, and healthy relationships are ensured by social systems grounded in Integrity, Honesty, and Wholeness…where all beings work and play at whatever feeds their soul and are well compensated for their Service…where authenticity and vulnerability are not only welcomed, but celebrated…where the Peace we cultivate within ourselves shows up as a world free of violence, hatred, or indifference…ours is a world where the Love that we are here to share is given freely to whomever our hearts are called to love…where we have moved beyond all lines of separation, and live as one human family, caring for one beautiful planet with the reverence she deserves. To these blessings, we say Yes!
We recognize that transformation is an on-going process, and especially in times of great change, people benefit from working, playing, and simply being together. And so this Community stands as an open and welcoming place for all who seek support, belonging, and a sense of Family. …it redefines Church as a place of Self-Discovery, Authenticity, Kindness, Radical Inclusion, and Love. To these blessings, we say Yes!
It is by the Power of the Great Mystery moving through each one of us that this prayer is acted upon, answered even as it is spoken…Divine Presence, Timing, and Process make it so. And so it is with profound gratitude and great Joy that I release my Word to the One Who Gets It Done…And so it is!…Amen! And for those studying the Upanishads right now, Om, Shanti, Shanti, Shanti!
Bringing awareness back to the body, to the room, to this beautiful life, and to the amazing beings who share this space with us this morning…
Can you feel the shift in energy? We have just created a ripple of Peace that has infused all that is and continues to send waves of renewal to all of Creation. And there’s nothing anyone can do about it. The deed is done, and I think we’re ready to have a Conscious Conversation.
This morning our topic has been Planting Seeds of Authenticity. During Taizé, we said that the word authentic comes from the same root as author. It refers to something or someone that is genuine…someone who creates or invents something new…someone who is expressing the unique self that she was created to be, independent of the good opinion of others…also, that authenticity does not grant me license to be thoughtless or brash in what I am expressing, or to speak my mind no matter who may be harmed. In fact, my authenticity demands that I speak and act according to the Goodness, Love, and Compassion that is the Truth of my being.
My authenticity grants me permission to stand in my Spiritual Authority, asking for Guidance as to who and what might be best for me, and accordingly, knowing that as we are all One, what is truly best for me is also best for the Whole.
We noted how interesting it is that we stand in our individuality, not realizing that the word individual means indivisible. So when I say that I am an authentic individual, what I’m really saying is that I am a unique expression of the One God, indivisible from all others, yet bringing my personal qualities and gifts into the world, in new ways every day in Service to the Whole.
I suggested that we lose sight of our human authenticity when we take our focus off of the one true God, the Universal Intelligence back of all life, the Infinitely Loving, giving Presence that permeates all of existence.
Finally, I shared a reading from Sister Joan Chittister. She is an 89-year-old American Benedictine nun, theologian, author, speaker, and activist who is still out there doing the Good Word. I’ll read the whole quote, then we’ll take some time to take it apart and have a Conscious Conversation. Here we go:

It requires us to unmask ourselves to ourselves so that God can come into our lives through our weaknesses…(through our true humility). We must learn to pray out of our weaknesses, (with humility) so that God(‘s Power) can become our Strength.”
Wow! That’s a lot to take in, so let’s break it down. Let’s go back to the start:
“False gods are very easy to come by in life. They seduce us with power, money, and fame. They are the things I can’t give up, the things I can’t do without, the things that shout out my identity to the world so that the world can know how important I am.
We make gods out of positions we hold. If people don’t know what we are, we make sure to tell them.”
What do you think about that? What are some of the false gods in your life? Don’t be shy, we all have them.
And what about making gods out of the positions we hold…the credentials we’ve earned…our accomplishments?
Don’t get me wrong. It’s appropriate to be pleased with our accomplishments.
But does this require us to speak it out loud?
What are some words that come to mind when you think of someone speaking their accomplishments out loud? (arrogant, boastful, insecure)
Okay, let’s look at the next section.
“We make gods out of the social system we have cultivated, about who invites us where to do what. We make gods out of the money and the baubles and the trinkets in our lives.”
What social systems have we turned into gods? (school system, Western Medicine, science, the media, religious doctrine and dogma)
She goes on to say that, “We learn even to make gods out of the very religious practices and spiritual disciplines that are meant to lead us beyond ourselves to God.”
Where do we see this in the world of Spirituality? (whenever we’re looking to something outside of ourSelves, we are in danger of making a god of something…granting it power over us)
The tools we use in ritual and ceremony are useful, perhaps even sacred. After all, there is nothing unholy in all of creation. But they are simply tools. They carry energy, and they may hold meaning for us. But their real power is pointing us inward to where our Real Power lies…to the Infinite Wisdom and Guidance that is always there for us when we listen.
Okay, let’s look at the next paragraphs:
“And in it all, we develop a totally inauthentic self. Not only do others not know who we really are behind all the bling and titles, but we don’t know either. Not only have we fooled others about what we really think and who we really are; too often we fool ourselves as well. More than that, too often we stop thinking about anything of real value at all.”
“We stop questioning our own motives. We fail to stretch beyond the comfortable spiritual conversations of another time and age. We stop growing inwardly, satisfied with where we have come, however far from the real content of the spiritual life. We play at being spiritual and do not even know we are only playing.” (Ouch)
“Out of that masking of the self comes another kind of confusion. When we are not bringing an honest self to the search for God we cannot possibly find the real God. We confuse the God of Life with the simpler version – the God of living. We want God to satisfy our present comforts, not as a guide to growth.”
Let’s give that last statement some attention: We confuse the God of Life with the simpler version – the God of living. We want God to satisfy our present comforts, not as a guide to growth.”
What does this say to you?
Okay, last section: “Prayer that emerges out of authenticity and honesty, however, takes us beyond all subterfuge, all hiding from God – even behind holy things. It requires us to unmask ourselves to ourselves so that God can come into our lives through our weaknesses…(I interpret that as through our true humility). We must learn to pray out of our weaknesses, (with humility) so that God(‘s Power) can become our Strength.”
Any thoughts?
Is there anything else that wants to be spoken right now?
Sister Joan offers a mantra for us to take into the silence: “Dear God, fill me with yourself so that I might be less full of myself.”
Let’s speak that out loud together. If the word God is uncomfortable, plug in your favorite alias for the Creator of All That Is.
“Dear God, fill me with yourself so that I might be less full of myself.”
“Great Spirit, fill me with yourself so that I might be less full of myself.”
“Infinite Intelligence, fill me with yourself so that I might be less full of myself.”
“One Life, fill me with yourself so that I might be less full of myself.”
There is great Power in hearing positive affirmation, spoken with feeling, in your own voice. There is a lot of research to back that up, for those of us who still have science as one of our gods 😊
Maybe you want to take this mantra with you and use it this week…see what it brings.
But for now, let’s close in prayer.
There is One Life, forever expressing, bringing form into Being, so that we might have the privilege of experiencing the many blessings of being human. Each one of us is a perfect and intentional expression of that One Life, exactly as we are…and as we are not. Each one irreplaceable…necessary to the Grand Tapestry of Life. It is so good to know that, in the Absolute…in the Mind of God…there is nothing wrong in any of us…there is nothing missing…we are each Perfect, Whole, and Complete, just as we are. Spirit sees only Perfection. My job in the coming week…and the same is True for each of us…is to show forth that Perfection…to call forward the Divine Qualities given us at birth. Love, Kindness, and Compassion are mine, and I consciously bring them into my daily life. Peace, Joy, and Beauty are mine, and I mindfully give them expression in my relationships.
I give thanks for the gentle reminders this morning…that our individual lives are enriched by prayer…that holding a shared Vision is powerful…that we are building our Faith in the world we know can be, letting this Vision become Real in sour hearts and mind , infusing it with our deep Knowing.
I give thanks for this Beautiful Community, for the support and sense of family that we share. I am so grateful for our beautiful and safe space to Gather, and for the financial and other support that makes it possible.
And I give thanks for every hand and heart that it took to bring the food to our table today. May everyone be blessed and know that their efforts are a blessing to the world.
In the spirit of Renewal, I release this prayer to the Loving and Lawful Presence that I call God, trusting completely that a prayer spoken and deeply felt is a prayer answered, and so, together we can say…and so it is. Amen!
