Is It Really That Simple?

Just another beautiful day in paradise as I complete my Practice this morning. I feel as though we pray and meditate together every morning, although we are physically separate. I hold each of you in Love and Deep Peace as I move through my time with God.

It feels good to be back on a more normal schedule this morning, although allowing for a different day yesterday worked well. Today I am Guided to share something I read long ago and haven’t thought about in years…Robert Fulghum’s list from Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Here is it:

1. Share everything.

2. Play fair.

3. Don’t hit people.

4. Put things back where you found them.

5. CLEAN UP YOUR OWN MESS.

6. Don’t take things that aren’t yours.

7. Say you’re SORRY when you HURT somebody.

8. Wash your hands before you eat.

9. Flush.

10. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.

11. Live a balanced life – learn some and drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work everyday some.

12. Take a nap every afternoon.

13. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.

14. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.

15. Goldfish and hamster and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup – they all die. So do we.

16. And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned – the biggest word of all – LOOK.”

Why is this present in me this morning? I think it’s because sometimes we tend to make spirituality so complicated. Our human brains, our ego self, wants to feel important, wants to demonstrate its intelligence, and so we over-think things. Wouldn’t our world be a more loving and peaceful place if we shared everything, played fair, and didn’t hit people? Not only with our fists…most of us reading this have moved beyond that. But what about with our thoughts and words? What if we all cleaned up all of our own messes? Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, as well. And what if we didn’t take things that weren’t ours? Not only material things, but how about refusing to take on the opinions, blame and judgment of others. Saying we’re sorry, and living life in balance… drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work everyday some…what would life on planet earth be like if everyone practiced this simple philosophy of living? Stick together, stay grounded, grow, pay attention, live in wonder, and appreciate living because this experience of life is all too short. Wow! Is it really that simple? These are the basics of a life well-lived.

Now, bringing this home to what is alive in me this morning…what is mine to know in this moment? Moving into this beautiful Spring, and having celebrated the Lenten Season and Easter together in a more contemplative, reflective, and meaningful way than ever before…and seeking to keep it as simple as Fulghum’s philosophy…I look inward for what insights I might have gained from our journey through Release, Renewal, and Resurrection. Here is what comes – I hope it offers food for thought.

Every day brings an endless stream of new possibilities… All things are possible.

I am free in every moment to begin again.

No matter what is happening in my life, there is always the possibility of some unexpected Good. This leaves me with faith in the best possible outcome, in God’s Goodness and Love.

Understanding Spiritual Principle, why would I entertain the possibility of anything less than joyful, peaceful, beautiful experiences? And…without attachment to form, because God’s Infinite Possibility is so much bigger than my limited perspective.

I challenge myself to be more loving, more kind and compassionate, more joyful, more optimistic, more Truthful than ever before…because it feels good.

I challenge myself to notice the miraculous nature of everyday life…to approach life with wonder and thanksgiving, and to walk more lightly upon the earth…because it makes me feel alive.

The book of Revelation in the Christian Bible offers this passage: “See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.” I challenge myself to look for the open door…there is always an open door to my next Highest and Best experience of life. But if my back is turned, if my eyes are closed or I am not willing to consider turning in every direction to look for it, if I am not willing to ask for Guidance and really listen, or if I don’t believe in open doors, then I will likely miss the opportunity. This doesn’t mean it wasn’t there, or that there won’t be another tomorrow. Every day is filled with possibility.

Well, it looks like Fulghum gets the simplicity prize, but I pray that these words, his and mine, have offered something to contemplate and to take into your day. I pray that you know the wonder and beauty of who you are. I pray that you recognize the simplicity, even as you experience the wonder of this amazing life.

May we all be well…stay in touch…know our Unity…and thrive!

And may we know the Absolute Beauty and Wonder of this Grace-filled, once-in-a lifetime day…
